YET again Wirral Council closed all grass facilities on a Thursday which resulted in many games being postponed and causing a backlog of league fixtures and cup competitions to be delayed.
However, three cup fixtures did take place on Astro surfaces to help some competitions to progress.
Alas it was a bad day in the Wirral District FA Junior Cup semi-finals as both league representatives bowed out in defeats. Shore Villa Athletic were 3-2 ahead until the final minutes thanks to goals from Paul Reddington and a brace from Phil Whitley, only to concede a late leveller and then lose the penalty shoot out 6-5 versus Mersey Clipper Vets.
North West Harriers were also eliminated when losing 3-1 versus Higher Beb Kelma.
The only other fixture played was the First Division Cup 2nd round fixture between One O’clock Gun and Finnigan FC that produced a great game which saw One O’clock Gun blast Finnigan FC out of the competition with an 8-1 victory, described as "men against boys" by the losing team. First half goals from Paul Finn, Ben Holmes and a double from Jamie Edwards eased the Gun into a 4-0 half time lead and a second half treble from the returning Morgan Galer, plus a single from Leighton Clarke proved too much for Finnigan FC, who only had a consolation effort from John Pomphrett to reduce the arrears.
Fixtures will be scheduled and provided on a weekly basis due to the backlog in cup competitions.
