A police investigation is underway following a suspected gas explosion at a house on a Wirral street.

Emergency services were called to a property on Glebe Hey Road in Woodchurch At around 4pm on Monday (April 1). Three fire engines were in attendance.

On arrival, crews found a two-storey property with the ground floor involved on fire.

Merseyside Police said a man received treatment at the scene for minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further assessment.

Residents from adjoining properties were also evacuated and later allowed back into their homes.

Police officers and staff from Cadent are on scene as an investigation into what happened continues.

A Merseyside Police statement read: "Officers were called out to reports of a suspected gas explosion in Woodchurch yesterday afternoon (Monday April 1).

"Just before 4pm, we received reports of a gas explosion at a property on Glebe Hey Road, causing damage to the front door and windows.

"Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, North West Ambulance Service and officers were in attendance at the scene.

"Officers are speaking to potential witnesses to the incident in order to understand the full circumstances and these enquiries are ongoing.

"A man received treatment at the scene for minor injuries and was taken to hospital for further assessment.

A spokesperson for Cadent Gas said: "Our engineers are on site assisting the emergency services as is routine in incidents like this. It is too early to speculate on what may have caused the incident.
