WIRRAL faced a day of chaos yesterday (Friday, October 20) as Storm Babet battered the region.

Met Office experts issued residents with a “danger to life” yellow weather warning which came into force from Midnight on Friday, October 20.

Heavy and persistent rain downpours were seen across the borough causing flooding, road closures, and railway cancellations.

A number of roads were affected by the weather including New Ferry Bypass, Brimstage Hall, Brimstage Road, Birkenhead Road, Hoylake, Raby Mere/Poulton Hall Road, Spital and Neston Road/Smithy Lane, Thornton Hough.

A flood alert was issued by the Environment Agency due to significant rise in levels in local rivers around the Rivers Fender and Birkett and Rivacre, Dibbinsdale and Arrowe Brook and their tributaries. The flood alert was also in force in parts of Birkenhead, Heswall, Bebington, Hoylake and Wallasey.

There was also flooding in parks including Wirral Country Park where heavy persistent rain caused the Wirral Way to flood. Rangers were on site trying to unblock surface water drains near to the park. Areas of the park that were worst affected included the sections of Wirral Way by Heswall Golf Course, Thurstaston and Ashton Park.

Merseyrail services were also disrupted by the rain with services between Rock Ferry and Chester/Ellesmere Port suspended due to flooding on the tracks at Hooton.

Replacement bus services between Rock Ferry and Chester remain in place until further notice.

Residents living in the CH46 and CH47 postcode areas of Wirral experienced power cuts which affected Park Lane, Lingham Lane, Leasowe Common and surrounding area.
