WIRRAL Council has begun a felling programme of 43 trees in Ashton Park, West Kirby. This follows recent extensive felling in Sandlea Park and on Grange Hill. Wirral is losing its heritage trees.

The council has referred to consulting “tree specialists” over the health of our public trees. Our concern is that these subjective opinions are commercially influenced and biased towards harvesting the timbers of our trees.

If a privately paid doctor diagnoses a patient who looks, and feels, perfectly healthy, yet was given just a week to live, it would be appropriate to appeal for a second opinion.

As a qualified ecologist, I absolutely stand by my judgment that the Ashton Park beech tree, the evidence of which is still apparent, was in total health before it was given an urgent felling order, and was felled on October 30.

Whatever the reason for backing the harvesting of timber through cutting and felling our public trees they are not acting in the interest of the safety of the public, as they are diminishing our oxygen production:

The scaremongering phrase “dangerous trees” is bandied liberally about to justify the extreme harvesting of our natural and often heritage trees.

Please help to fight this continued environmental destruction and help to call an immediate stop to the felling for the benefit of humankind

D Johnson,

For Trees Wirral.
