THE Chilcot report has proven again what we all knew in our hearts all along – the war in Iraq did not have to happen in 2003, it was a political choice made by Tony Blair and forced upon the British people.

Our country was marched to war by loud voices dominating the media, by the publication of false information supporting an unproven case, and by heaping abuse on those who disagreed as "traitors" or "appeasers" and worse.

It is sad to see that 13 years later our country is being marched out of the European Union in exactly the same way.

We need to learn lessons from Chilcot not just about how and when we go to war, but about the way in which we as a country debate decisions with such vast and irreversible implications.
