IT was very interesting to read the article in last week's Globe relating to the crime commissioner election and the comments of Jane Kennedy.

Just 30.2 per cent of voters took up the opportunity to vote and of that number only 61 per cent voted for Jane Kennedy, meaning nearly 70 per cent of the eligible electorate did not vote for her and of those that did only a mere 20 per cent of the eligible electorate supported her re-election.

This is hardly an overwhelming vote of confidence in her, although she attempts to relate this to confidence in her and the police.

Let's separate the two issues, what has she actually achieved since originally coming to power in 2012?

Other than, of course, receiving a nice large salary, the answer seems very little that is noticeable to the average member of the public.

Hence yet again only a 30 per cent turnout, this increase being more attributable to the election being on the same day as the local council elections, rather than the popularity of the crime commissioner post.

The large salary for the post would be far better spent on providing additional valuable front line police resources.

So let’s have a reality check and truly appreciate the real percentages and what they really mean.
