I GATHER that I am not alone in spending evening after frustrated evening attempting, and failing, to register my child’s school admission preferences via Wirral Council’s online School Admissions Service.

Why do I persist? Because those who use the official paper form will see their child penalised with belated notification of admissions outcomes via second class mail, rather than by the emails promised to those lucky enough to succeed in registering their choices online.

Adults can cope with such delays; but it seems somewhat unfair to require children to do likewise simply due to the failings of a council website.

For next year my suggestion is that the council ensures that its website is geared up to cope with the “unexpectedly high volume” of admission applications that arises shortly after 11-plus results are published.

For this year I suggest that the council provides email notification of allocation outcomes to all those submitting via paper form who provide an email address.

If anyone agrees, please join me in letting the council know how you feel.

Paul Williamson, Bebington.
