WHEN Birkenhead Central Library was threatened with closure, Frank Field warned councillors not to relinquish ownership of important buildings and locations.

The proposal to demolish Rock Ferry High School is another case in point.

Councillors must consider whether, in view of the regeneration of the area and the expected influx of young families, the destruction of existing educational buildings standing in an extensive and attractive parkland setting would be prudent.

Would a subsequent sale of the site come to be seen as anything other than a short-term gain, to be spent elsewhere in the borough, and a long-term disaster for Rock Ferry?

Incoming families will soon create a strong demand for secondary school places and playing fields and there will be no such provision within walking or cycling distance.

Pupils will be condemned to wasted hours on buses to other parts of the borough.

Is it sensible to lose an irreplaceable asset for short-term gain?

Do they have a vision?

Are they prepared to share it with the community?
