GIVEN the scale of cuts to local services it seems only fair elderly swimmers bear their share.

The introduction of charges for over 65s swimmers, however, is supposed to be tempered by the concession of free swimming up to noon on weekdays.

In practice, these "concessions" are of little help.

It's not possible to swim after 9.30am on weekdays because of the timings of sessions for other groups.

The weekends are in very great demand, rightly, for those who work or attend school on weekdays.

To benefit on Wednesdays, the elderly would have to be up and about very early, which presents real health issues for many.

Also, their bus passes don’t apply, so any savings on swimming are cancelled out by fares. Exercise is especially valuable for the elderly.

If it is genuinely intended to offer concessionary swimming sessions, shouldn’t they be at times when the elderly can actually benefit from them?
