I AM a grandfather and remember when my children had free travel to their secondary schools, because of the distance from home to school.

My grandson attends South Wirral High School and lives near Bromborough Cross.

It is too far to walk and, as we are repeatedly told to restrict car usage, travels to and from school by bus at a cost of 50p each way.

We have just been informed that as from January 19, fares will increase from 50p to 70p each way.

How can a fare increase of 40 per cent be justified when wages/pensions are restricted to 1 per cent or 2 per cent?

To rub salt into the wounds, some local papers are carrying adverts for a school in Birkenhead, offering free transport for Year 7 students.

Shouldn’t educational conditions be universal across Wirral?
