YOUR columnist Peter Grant suggests the licence fee is no longer value for money because so many people chose to watch TV on iPlayer (Granty’s Inferno, October 22).

I'd like to clarify; a TV licence is needed to watch or record programmes at the same time as they are shown on TV, regardless of the device used or how the programmes are received.

This includes watching live TV on iPlayer, or any other online TV service.

While online services such as iPlayer are gaining in popularity, well under two per cent of households only ever watch catch-up services so don't need a TV licence.

The cost of the licence fee works out at just 40p a day for the BBC’s wide range of TV, radio and online programmes and services.
