Tunnel tolls: We have been let down by Merseytravel members

First published in Letters

I WOULD just like to say as a regular tunnel user, how I feel very let down by our four elected councillors who sit on the Merseytravel board as Wirral members, Steve Foulkes, Ron Abbey, John Salter and Les Rowlands.

Whilst all four voted against the increase they obviously never stated Wirral's case strongly enough as they failed to gain one other vote or influence one other member of the board, and I wonder whether their 'NO' vote was a token gesture that still allows them to keep their well expensed (rumoured to be £20,000 plus each for a part time position) seats on the Merseytravel board.

Once again the people of Wirral have been let down by the elected councillors who should be fighting our corner.

I don't think you can blame our four local councillors for the cynicism of their committee colleagues.

Clearly there's an ideological agenda at work here: that agenda being that from a Merseytravel point of view, Wirral commuters are a cash cow to be milked as painfully and as often as possible.

The case for removing tolls at the Mersey Tunnels is overwhelming, but government won't support it because it would damage the plan to bring in tolls at Widnes when the new bridge opens.
