LABOUR council leader Philip Davies has given what has now become firmly established as his annual Pontius Pilate speech (Wirral Globe, December 8).

He blithely announces yet another tranche of council cuts and privatisation of services, and then announces: "Don't blame me, blame the government."

Unfortunately, this is the stock refrain of Labour councils the length and breadth of the country, who steadfastly refuse to put up any fight whatsoever against the Tories and their unrelenting attacks upon working-class jobs, wages, and council services, and simply pass on government cuts rather like a customs official rubber-stamps a passport at the airport.

The cutbacks will not, of course, impinge at all upon the handsome allowances, perks, and privileges of councillors like Cllr Davies and company.

So the question arises: Why vote Labour?

Working class people vote Labour in the hope it is different from the Tories and will fight for its interests.

Regrettably, the past 30 years of Tweedledum, Tweedledee politics in this country have demonstrated that both major parties are different sides of the same pro-capitalist coin, and will obediently do the dirty work of the capitalists at all times regardless of the effect on the poorest and most vulnerable members of the community.
