Rugby extra: Wirral in charge

Wirral Globe: Wirral in action against Wilmslow Wirral in action against Wilmslow

WHILE many matches throughout the North and the Wirral were postponed, Wirral were able to fulfil this fixture against Wilmslow and achieved a try bonus point win.

The home team decided to play with the wind and the rain in the first-half and so much of the game was played in the Wilmslow half.

From the start Wirral attacked but Wilmslow were proving to be resilient.

The first points came after Wirral were penalised when putting pressure on the line, the clearance did not reach touch, the ball being caught by Sam Broadbent who advanced deep into Wilmslow 20m area before off-loading to Rob Pearl who ran in to score, the try being converted by Craig Harvey.

Much as Wirral pressed they could not break through to score again until a minute from the end of the first-half.

The referee had awarded a try to Ali Baker who followed up a kick through only for the Wilmslow papers to object and he reversed his decision.

From the resultant play, the away team could not clear the ball and was taken by Wirral who passed along the line where Sam Broadbent crashed in at the corner, with Craig Harvey converting from the touchline.

Wirral considered that the lead 14-0 was not enough at half-time given the wind advantage to Wilmslow in the turnaround.

After the restart, Wirral changed tactics by controlling the ball and thus much of game was spent in the Wilmslow half.

As a result they were rewarded with two further Rob Pearl tries from 5m scrums within the next 20 minutes to put the game beyond reach and score that vital try bonus point.

With the points secured the final 20 minutes were played out without any further points being scored despite a number of promising Wirral attacks.

With Birkenhead Park not playing on Saturday due to their pitch not being playable, Wirral now have a six-point cushion at the top having played a game more.
