HEAVY rain early in the morning meant fewer bowlers than expected turned up to try to win points to qualify for the Top Sixteen Tournament next Sunday.

In the event conditions were nothing like as bad as expected and Port Sunlight Village and Work's Nick Woodward was able to record his first ever win in the Flyers.

In the final he beat your correspondent, West Kirby Victoria's Bill Atkinson.

In the quarter finals Woodward beat the consistent Tommy Walker and he then had a very close game with Andy Buchanan in the semis.

To get to the final Atkinson had two very good wins, firstly he got the better of the in form John Hignett Jnr in the quarters and then, in a really excellent game, he beat Roger Griffiths in the semi final.

Atkinson took an early lead at 12-07 in the final but Woodward was able to up his game and, taking full advantage of a dip in form by Atkinson, he ran at a very worthy winner at 21-16.

Up until this week Woodward has not really shown the form of which he is capable but this win was fully deserved and it has catapulted him up the points table.
