THE weather was the reverse of the last two weeks – after a wet start the final was played in dry improving conditions.

Heswall's John Lloyd made his first appearance in Birkenhead Park for some time and capped a fine series of games by beating Lever’s John Roberts in the final.

In the quarter-finals Lloyd was just too good for Port Sunlight Village and Works Nick Woodward and then he had a hard fought victory over Lever’s Colin Portis.

Roberts had to come through two difficult games, he beat the consistent John Jones of Mold in the quarters and then Tixall’s Ian Hazlehurst in the semi-final.

Lloyd somewhat dominated the final and took a good 21-14 win.

Results:

J. Roberts (Levers) 21, J. Jones (Mold) 18; I. Hazlehurst (Tixall) 21, W. Atkinson (West Kirby) 16; C. Portis (Levers) 21, T. Cavanagh (Upton Victory Hall) 15; J. Lloyd (Heswall RBL) 21, N. Woodward (Port Sunlight V&W) 10.

Semi-finals: Roberts 21, Hazlehurst 19; Lloyd 21, Portis 18. Final: Lloyd 21, Roberts 14.

This week’s results did not affect the top of the points table.

The top five are currently: Matt Gilmore 40, Mick Andrews and Joe Edwards both on 32 and Tom Walker and John Hignett Jnr both on 23.
