SUNDAY saw the opening event of the season for Wallasey Association and West Kirby Victoria captured the Five-a-Side Cup for the first time in three years with a hard fought victory in the final over New Brighton Queens Royal 'B' Team.

The competition, run over two days at Central Park, produced many close results with two matches having to be decided on most winners after the scores were tied.

Despite an excellent early win for the Queen's Matthew Cunliffe the Vics were always in control of the final and they won the remaining four games with Matthew Gilmore's 21-11 the pick of the bunch.

Results: Semi-finals: West Kirby Victoria 86, Manor Road 'B' 84; New Brighton Queens Royal 'B' 93, Sandridge 'A' 91.

Final: West Kirby Victoria 103, New Brighton Queens Royal 'B' 85.

The last tournament of his season's Winter Flyers was also played on Sunday with the top 16 players in the points table coming together to compete for the final prize.

At the end of a good morning's play it was Mick Andrews, the most consistent winner over the years of these events, who yet again took first place beating Eddie Dutton in the final.

In the semi finals both Andrews and Dutton had excellent victories over two of the players who represent teams in North Wales.

Andrews was just too consistent for Paul Roberts while Dutton had a very comfortable win over John Jones.

The final was close but Andrews always had the edge and he ran out a 21-17 winner.
