THERE was plenty of action in the Birkenhead & Wirral league in midweek.

First up saw Bromborough Rake crowned second division champions. The Rake claimed the title after a narrow 2-1 victory on home soil against FC Wirral.

The champions scored via a 20-yard scorcher from Chris Hogan and an own goal as player/manager Danny Wilson and his side celebrated after the final whistle.

Thursday saw history in the making with the first ever Veterans Cup Final since the league was formed back in 1919.

New Ferry Park Hotel met Avenue in a game that went right to the wire. The game was tied 3-3 at the final whistle after New Ferry came back from being 3-1 down, extra time could not separate the two sides as Ferry went on to seal the victory on penalties.

Terry Merrimen, Craig Reece and a 30-yard screamer from Steve Howard completed the comeback with Paul Williams scoring the all important winning penalty.

Mark Galer and man of the match Les Cotgrave netted with a great free kick coming from Mike Edwards for the unlucky Avenue.

It wasn't all bad for Avenue as they were christened the first ever Veterans League Winners, the league committee presented captain Dave Carrington with the trophy in what was a great advert for veterans football on The Wirral.

Good Friday saw the final of the Regents Cup take place at Heswall FC's ground. McGinty's clawed their way back from 3-1 down against Bird FC to make it 3-3 at the final whistle.

They won the game 6-3 in extra time after the in form Nathan Harding smashed in five goals aided by a Jay Brown penalty for the jubilant McGinty's.

Captain Kyle Williams netted twice with Jamie Williams also on target for the unlucky Bird FC.

The league would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all teams on winning silverware this week and also commiserate with the teams finishing runners up.

In Division One, Queens Arms lost 3-6 to Myrtle AFC. Peter Rutter grabbed a brace his first a clever free kick into the top corner with Lee Grimsby yet again on the score sheet for The Queens.

The Myrtle had Derek Taylor, Adam Maizer and Paul Kane all firing in doubles for manager Tom Doughty.

In Division Two, Parkfield BA finished 2-1 winners at home to FC Wirral in the local derby.

Nick Munn was the highlight of the game opening up the scoring with a neat little lob over the oncoming keeper, Carl Andrews grabbed the winner from the penalty spot.

Paul Gundersen replied for FC Wirral.

Newly-crowned champions Bromborough Rake took on second placed AFC. Stadium in a close 2-2 draw. John Jackson and Gerwin Roberts fired in for Stadium.

Tommy Belton drove in from 18 yrds out and an own goal sealed a point for The Rake.
