NESTON South Wirral suffered their first home defeat of the year, as they slumped 3-2 to Winnington Park in their last game of the season.

With several players not at the races, Neston produced a woeful display that eventually got its just rewards, although they actually opened the scoring early on when Aled Jarvis slotted home after good work from Mark Donnelly.

Unfortunately the home team repeatedly gave away possession, and keeper Rich Lowry had to make a couple of fine saves to maintain their lead.

Winnington eventually drew level as Paul Stackhouse fired in after Neston again gave away cheap possession.

Before the interval, the visitors gained a deserved lead, with Dave Hunt hitting the target.

Neston were barely any better in the second half, and with their penalty corner team struggling, they didn't look likely to get back into the game until Lawrence McNeight appeared at the far post to deflect in Donnelly's pass for the equaliser.

Neston looked like they would pick up an unlikely point, until the defence allowed a visiting forward to amble past a couple of weak challenges, before Pete Evans tapped in from half a yard to win it for Park in the last minute.

Neston may slip out of the top half of the table when other sides complete their fixtures next week, but after sitting in the relegation zone at Christmas, they will be relatively satisfied with their first season back in the North League.
