SATURDAY in The Birkenhead & Wirral AFL saw Sponsors Cup action take centre stage with no major cup upsets being recorded in round two.

FC Wirral took on first division opponents Myrtle AFC at home in which the visitors came away with a 2-0 win.

Darren Sutton slotted in a penalty and Derek Taylor fired home after a mazy solo run to put The Myrtle through to the quarter-finals.

Ian McGrath smashed in a hat-trick aided by a Dave Bowe single to put Claughton Hotel through after a very close 4-3 encounter against a stubborn Fender side. Chris Amis, Steven Lowry and Liam Williams all netted for the unlucky home side.

First division McGinty's educated a young Parkfield BA team from the second division in a 7-2 home victory.

Ralph Welch scored twice his first was the pick of the games goals coming from just outside the area, Callum kelly, Bohan Dixon, Neil O'Shea, Gary Kelly and player/manager Festus Fearon completed the scoring for McGinty's.

Top scorer Jason Flaherty and Joe Bowden hit Parkfield's replies in a spirited performance against quality opposition.

Second division league leaders Bromborough Rake took on Shaftesbury Avenue from The Veterans league beating them 4-0.

Carl Boyd scored two his second direct from the corner flag, Keith O'Toole cut inside to unleash a shot into the top corner then danny Wilson completed things to send The Rake safely into the next round.

Birkenhead FC punished a seriously understrength Bird FC side in a 10-1 rout to progress through to the semi's. Forwards Ian Louchran and Jamie Edwards both hit trebles, Ricky Louchran steered in twice with Michael Purnell and a chip from the edge of the box by Liam Stewart finishing things off for Birkenhead. Top scorer Micky McCann hit a double for the depleted Bird.

AFC Stadium sealed a place in the next round after disposing of Ridgewood Rangers in a 5-3 tussle, John Jackson netted a double, Carl Aldred and Rob Wellens also on target and an own goal rounding things off for Stadium. Neil Davies, Farris Baker and Peter Kearns slotted in for the hard working Rangers side.

The last of the cup ties saw an all second division encounter as Bronze Social took on Neston Legion in a 5-2 win for The Bronze, man of the match Robbie Langton and captain Neil Harper both found the back of the net with two goals a piece and Gareth Anderton finished with a cooly taken spot kick to ease them safely into the hat for the next round draw.

Luke Gee grabbed The Legion's consolations and Colombo Mwambe was voted man of the match.
