THE weekend's games were dominated by Sponsors Cup first round fixtures.

First up saw the clash of the titans as first placed Birkenhead FC took on second placed McGinty's in an action-packed 2-4 result in McGinty's favour.

Ralph Welch hit a decent double aided by a cracker into the top corner from the edge of the box by Jesse Owens, Bohan Dixon completed the score line with a mazy run from the half way line to round the keeper and place into the net.

Top-placed second division Bromborough Rake cruised into the next round of the cup after a convincing 6-0 victory over Neston Legion.

Player/manager Danny Wilson slotted in a brace his second courtesy of a 25 yrd curling shot into the back of the net.

Tony Inskip got his name on the sheet again with two bullet headers, Carl Boyd, Keith O'Toole rounded things off for The Rake.

FC Wirral go into the hat for the next round draw after disposing of local rivals Bronze Social in a 4-1 tussle. Alex Wilson, Jake Painter, Craig Armitage all hit solo's and a spectacular long range strike for Matty Hughes sealed the game for Wirral.

Myrtle AFC go through after a close 2-1 encounter against Queens Arms, Darren Sutton poached with a tap in then Derek Taylor grabbed the winner as he cooly slotted home under pressure for jubilant Myrtle. Lee Grimsby netted for The Queens.

Shaftesbury Avenue from the Veterans league overcame second division high flyer's AFC Stadium in a pretty even game which ended 2-1.

Both goals coming from good passing movement, David Harrington and Peter Reeves were the hit-men for The Shafts. Stadiums reply came via an own goal.

In Division One, Bird FC went down 4-2 at home to Claughton Hotel, Ian McGrath scored 2, James Brown and David Bowe all finishing with goals from inside the area.

Kyle Williams kept up his good scoring streak after firing in a double and keeper John Hurst claimed his third man of the match in a row for The Bird.

Parkfield BA in Division Two claimed the points to stay in third spot after just edging it 2-1 over Ridgewood Rangers.

Lee Charlton smashed in the first with substitute Jason Flahtey hitting an unstoppable pile driver from distance to seal the victory for Parkfield.
