TWO second half goals secured victory for Liverpool against Wirral in the Merseyside Schoolboys Under-11s' League at Shaftsbury Boys' Club, next to Prenton Park.

The first half was dominated by an enterprising Wirral side whose central midfield duo of Joe Downey and Declan Drysdale secured much of the early possession.

The Liverpool goal was threatened a number of times through the middle by Kieran Holsgrove but failed to test the keeper from distance.

Wirral went close when a Michael Burkey cross found Joshua Solomon-Davies in the box whose point blank effort was parried by Patrick Wharton before being cleared by the Liverpool defence.

Liverpool's only real first half attack nearly broke the deadlock when a defence splitting pass from Ben Jacobson put Michael Kielty through in a one-on-one with Wirral keeper, Owen Kirkham, who managed to turn the close range shot past the post with an outstretched foot.

A more hard-fought affair in the second half saw Wirral using the flanks to greater effect to penetrate the Liverpool defence.

However it was the physical strength of Liverpool's striker, Michael Kielty, which troubled Wirral's defence throughout the match and which led to them conceding a free kick midway through the second half.

From just outside the Wirral penalty box Anthony Wishart stepped up and lofted the ball over Thomas Harvey in the Wirral goal.

From the kick off Wirral began chasing the game which resulted in Liverpool's second goal ten minutes later when Nathan Morton outmuscled the Wirral defender, sliding his shot under Thomas Harvey.

Wirral continued to attack and earned a free kick in a similar position to Liverpool's. Jamie Eaton's lofted cross towards the back post was headed behind for a corner by a Liverpool defender from which Wirral failed to capitalise.

With five minutes remaining Joshua Solomon-Davies was released down the right wing and his lightning pace took him past the defence and in towards the edge of the box but his shot went over the Liverpool bar.
