THREE members of Wirral Premier Table Tennis Club have been selected to represent England at Under-16 level at the English Schools' International Table Tennis tournament in the Isle of Man in June.

And in what must be deemed as a club record, player and coach Clare Peers has been asked to accompany the English team as coach.

Claire recently returned from Largs, Scotland, where she coached the primary school team to gold.

The three players - Jordyn Layfield, Fiona Dennett and Tom Bray - caught the selectors' eye by producing exceptional performances at the recent National Table Tennis Championships.

The trio are no strangers to top level competition. All are highly ranked in England, with Fiona having played internationally for Ireland and Jordyn having represented English Schools' on two previous occasions. She won the primary schools' international championships at the tender age of 11, beating off opposition from Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.

The club also boasts of other international players, including Clare Langford, who also represented England Schools' Under-18s last year.

All of the players are coached by ETTA Level 3 Michael Marsden, who expressed no surprise at their selection. He is pleased that their hard work, commitment and ability have been recognised and believes each player can perform to a high standard at the tournament.

Coaching sessions take place on Wednesday night at 7pm at New Ferry Village Hall for advanced players. Anyone who wishes to be considered for the squad is welcome to attend and have a discussion with Michael.

A session is run for beginners to intermediate level on a Wednesday (6.15pm-7.30 pm). New players are always welcome.

Wirral Table Tennis League congratulates Derek Evans, of Spinners, and Bill Stanley (ESWA), who have now been elected to the committee.

Any new clubs wishing to join the league for the season starting in September should contact John Trenbirth on 608-3637 for registration forms. Details are also available from Stan Wilkinson 327 2181.
