Boston United 1-0 Cammell Laird Cammell Laird FC had secured a Unibond Premier League final placing outside of the relegation zone courtesy of other results going their way earlier in midweek but they clearly wanted to finish with a flourish as they traveled to Boston United, a football league club only two seasons ago but themselves struggling for survival this season.

Lairds got off to a tough start as they found themselves a goal behind as early as the sixth minute when the referee deemed that Anthon Gardner had handballed in the box and awarded a penalty.

Jon Frogatt stepped forward to take the spot kick and placed it past Richie Whiteside to put the Pilgrims ahead.

Lairds regrouped and quickly got a foothold in the game, playing some decent football on the lush York Street surface, making decent runs forwards at every opportunity.

Their first real chance came on a quarter of an hour when Gardner shot agonisingly wide from twenty yards.

Anthony Sheehan was at the centre of most of what Lairds were creating with his distribution faultless throughout the first half, keeping the Lairds forward line alert band expectant throughout.

However Boston themselves were not just spectators in the game they too were swift on the attack and could have scored on 32 minutes with a tidy effort from David Farrell which Whiteside did well to save.

On the stroke of half time a tantalising corner from Sedgemore was headed goalwards by Ellender but his effort scraped the bar on its way out and the Lairds defence were able to breathe a sigh of relief.

In the second half both sides tried to keep up the momentum of the first half but neither seemed able to make the attacking impact required in the final third.

Ellender headed over after a good cross from Melton for the home side whilst at the other end Josh Thompson was as ever present threat with his pace in what was likely to be his last game for Lairds as he was due to finish his loan spell from Crewe after this game.

There was just enough time for a raft of substitutions which saw player manager Derek Ward get an outing on to the field of play for the first time in a while.

But Froggat’s early penalty proved to be the deciding goal in this game which saw Boston home to safety and Lairds finish in eighteenth spot.

Lairds' future in the Unibond Premier League now depends on a ground grading appeal that will be heard next month after the Ground Inspection Committee were unwilling to grant the Kirklands side the necessary “C” Grading required to play at that level.

The club have launched an appeal against the Leagues decision to relegate the club and they have already started the appeals process with chief executive George Higham leading the way.
