New Ferry Wirral Hotel are now one victory away from creating history in the Wirral Sunday League's Premier Division.

Thwey could become the first side ever to win the title three years in succession, since the league's inception in 1969.

Sunday's 6-1 defeat of Wirral Health saw Simon Crabtree's challengers erode Lancelyn Glenavon's lead at the top to two points.

Doubles from Peter Charles and Paul Haddock were supplemented by further efforts from Andy Barker and Barry Mason.

Ferry's final game against Lancelyn, will decide the outcome of the title, and is scheduled to take place before another bumper crowd at Cammell Laird.

Anything short of a win, will see Lancelyn crowned champions.

On Friday evening at Cammell Laird, the Ferry, inspired by midfield enforcer, Peter Charles, overcame local rivals New Ferry Town 4-0, in the Challenge Cup semi-finals, and they're now strong favourites to win the trophy for the first time, when they take on Division Two minnows, The Chronicle, next month.

Toddy Hodson's reign in charge of Premier Division strugglers, Sportsmans Victoria, ended on a happy note, after they won 3-1 against Eagle & Crown.

The result saw Sports escape relegation at the eleventh hour, and at the same time, they sent Eagle down. Jamie Whittaker, Davie Watterson and Graham Corlett netted for the winners.

In Division One, third placed Tixalls fine tuned their act in readiness for this Friday evening's Senior Cup final against Euro Wirral, at Cammell Laird, after doubles from Matty Morgan and Kieran Graham clinched a 4-2 result at Wallasey Village.

Danny Burns and Matty Davies replied for the Villagers.

Champions, Euro Wirral, also kept in trim, thanks to a 3-1 victory over runners-up Towers, and few would bet against the powerful Rock Ferry outfit achieving a league and cup double.

The see saw battle for the Division Two title took on another twist at the weekend. Current leaders, The Nook beat Millcroft 2-1 on Friday, with 92nd minute winner, but on Sunday crashed 2-1 to goals from Bromborough Hotel's Jim Roberts and Gareth Barr.

Nearest rivals, The Chronicle, were held to a 2-2 stalemate by Gladstone Ath. on Friday, but bounced back on Sunday after Phil Owen's fine hat trick sparked a 5-1 win against Bee Hotel.

Dave Mason, Steve Bostock, Lee Warburton and Gary Jones celebrated with a goal each as Halfway House triumphed 4-0 against Neston.

Riverside Town romped home 5-0 against The Plough while Gladstone Ath. and Millcroft settled for a share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw.
