AN entertaining and full-blooded Wirral District FA Senior Cup semi-final between Cammell Laird 1907 FC and Vauxhall Motors reserves took place at the KRCT Stadium on Tuesday with the hosts eventually winning through a penalty shoot-out.

Vauxhalls opened the game brightly and took less than six minutes to open the scoring when Bisensio Kamilo capitalised on slow defending to rifle home a good goal.

Lairds fought back in an end-to-end encounter and saw efforts from Zac Catesby and Jamie Eaton rebound to safety off the crossbar and post respectively, but the visitors always looked dangerous on the break.

The second half got off to a lively start with both teams striving to get the upper hand, but play was halted after about 15 minutes as a spectator required medical assistance at pitch side due to falling unconscious and the game was delayed for about 20 minutes as he received help and support from first aiders and a paramedic.

When the game restarted it was an open affair with chances created but not being taken by either team.

As the game progressed Lairds became stronger as captain Ryan Smith urged his team on with Kieran Cartwright and Eaton in full support and the defence holding strong against any counter attacks.

The final ten minutes were played predominately in the visitors half as Lairds sought an equaliser and this deservedly came in the 83rd minute as Zac Catesby blasted home from close range, after having his first effort saved.

Further efforts were created but missed and so the game ended 1-1 at full time.

The penalties that followed saw Vauxhalls miss their first effort, but score the next two, whereas Ben Wood, Cartwright and Ryan Smith all scored with ease to go 3-2 ahead.

Then keeper Ciaran O'Loughlin saved the next kick for Lairds and had the chance to seal victory himself but placed his effort over the bar and Vauxhalls levelled the scores, before Matty Beaman netted the final spot kick to secure a 4-3 victory.

Cammell Laird now play Capenhust Villa in the final.

Lairds are again at home on Saturday versus Stockport Georgians with a 3pm kick off.

The reserves are away versus West Kirby Reserves in the Shield semi final with a 2pm kick off.

The youth team are home at Higher Beb versus Mossley Hill Athletic with a 10.30am kick off.
