WALLASEY Cricket Club have paid tribute to former player John Faulkner who has died aged 81.

John played his first match for Wallasey in 1959, aged 16 and was in the same team as his father, George.

He would go on to play for the 1st XI from 1961 to 1984, scoring almost 8,000 runs with forty 50s and one century, that being an unbeaten 122 at Trafalgar Road against Southport and Birkdale in 1969.

John also went on to play for Sefton and Huyton.

A spokesperson for Wallasey said: "It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that longstanding member John Faulkner has sadly passed away after a short illness at the age of 81.

"John, a former club captain, was both a determined and at the same time classy left hand opening batsman who represented the 1st team with great distinction throughout the 60s and 70s.

"In later years John umpired for the second team and more recently was a regular supporter of the teams during the summer.

"Our condolences go out to John’s wife Di and children Sarah, Christopher, Joanne and Kim."
