WIRRAL golfer Matthew Jordan has secured a place at The Open after a stunning display at West Lancashire Golf Club.

Jordan, 27, who grew up in West Kirby and lives in Hoylake, will now compete at his home course of Royal Liverpool, where he has been a member since the age of seven.

Jordan made it to his second Major and second successive Open Championship after posting a 10-under total at West Lancs in Crosby.

The home favourite finished one behind recent PGA Tour winner and four-time DP World Tour victor Matt Wallace, who led the way at 11-under after rounds of 68 and 65.

Jordan said: "I knew this was kind of the last chance and I realised it was coming and prepared for it as well as I could.

"Then I just had to go out and do it.

"The whole day was brilliant. I don't know what to expect and don't exactly know what it will be like.

"I know it's going to be good so I will prep myself for it and I'll take it all in. "For now I'll just enjoy it and look forward to that moment.

“Playing in front of my home crowd today was brilliant so I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like come two weeks’ time,” Jordan said in a social media post on the DP World Tour’s account.

“It was great playing with Sergio (Garcia), obviously a great player, Masters champion and brilliant off the tee. He obviously brought more people along so I thoroughly enjoyed his company. I cannot wait to get there (Hoylake).”

Sergio Garcia, Graeme McDowell and Michael Block were among some of the biggest names to miss out at Final Qualifying for the 151st Open which takes place in Hoylake later this month.

Practice at The Open begins on July 16, with the tournament taking place from 20 – 23 July.
