Tunnel tolls rising again

THE TUNNEL tolls are rising again.

From April 6, car drivers will be charged £1.40 per journey through either the Kingsway or Queensway tunnels - a rise of 10p.

But class 2 vehicles - including minibuses and small goods vehicles - are being hit far harder.

The toll from April for drivers of those vehicles will leap from £1.30 to £2.80 per journey.

Buses and vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes go up to £4.20 from £3.90.

And HGVs will incur a 40p rise to £5.60 per journey.

Merseytravel board members will rubber-stamp the increases when they meet on Monday.

Ironically, exactly a week later - on February 11 - Scotland's road crossings will become completely toll-free.

The Mersey Tunnels increases are expected to raise an extra £3.6m profit which will be channelled towards other Merseytravel schemes across Merseyside.

Merseytravel claims that the increases will discourage people from using the tunnels as a cheap alternative to public transport, thus causing less environment damage.

John McGoldrick, secretary of the Mersey Tunnel Users' Association, said: "This is absolutely outrageous.

"Yet again the motorist is being hit in the pocket and yet again Merseytravel are fudging the issue.

"These increases aren't going towards paying off the debt of the tunnels, which was the whole reason for the tolls in the first place. They are purely for making a profit.

"Most people who use the tunnels do so because they have to. Not everyone is on a bus route or near a train station, no matter how much Merseytravel would like everyone to believe.

"Wirral motorists are completely ignored on this issue. It is scandalous."

Cllr. Chris Blakeley, (Wirral's Conservative representative on Merseytravel) said: "At a time of rising household bills and Council Tax, regular tunnel users will have to fork out around £50 more every year for the privilege of subsidising public transport elsewhere in Merseyside.

"The Mersey Tunnels Bill, which was pushed through by Labour MPs, is now coming back to haunt us.

"Merseytravel has not proposed any improvements in Wirral with the extra money this cash will raise. Once again, we are seeing Wirral residents who have the misfortune to work in Liverpool being hit with a tax hike. It is time that Merseytravel and the Government followed the example of the Scottish Executive and placed both tunnels within the national road network, free of tolls.

"I will not be supporting this rise."

It's an absolute disgrace. Do you remember when it was first built and they said it would be free after it had paid for itself?? It's now probably paid for itself 100 times over.

It wont have paid for itself coz all the toll attendants were on the fiddle until about 10 years ago.

"Merseytravel claims that the increases will discourage people from using the tunnels as a cheap alternative to public transport, thus causing less environment damage" - If this is true why are they putting up the costs for buses? In turn the buses companies will charge higher fares.

Every local/national authority or transport based company have now come to regard the commuter and the motorist as a soft target. This latest rise stinks, as does the attitude of those who impose it. we will never get to know the real reason for the rise because it is based on greed. How come the Dartford Crossing between Kent and Essex has kept the tolls to £1 for a car for well over a decade?

once again scotland gets fees abolished and we have to pay.It is about time we told this government enough is enough, and if our councillors endorse it then we should boot them out as well.

Jack Frost, wirral says...

Lets use the ferries again or allow us to walk through the tunnels for free, there's plenty of space below the road way.

I will just stay at home and throw £5 notes out the window!!!

Dave Rimmer, Wallasey says...

Presumably Merseytravel have to find the funds from somewhere to resurrect the tram fiasco and it looks to me as though the residents of Wirral working in Liverpool we be paying the price. Bigfoot...let me know when you decide to chuck those fivers out the window, I will oblige and remove the rubbish from your garden

A Wilson, Seacombe says...

If the rise in tunnel tolls is to encourage people to use public transport, why are the tolls for buses and HGV's increasing??? Do Merseytravel really think that we are THAT stupid ???

John, says...
11:24pm Fri 1 Feb 08

Boycot the tunnels. Really you have buses, trains and even the ferry so I estimate 70% of people that use the tunnels in their cars do not need to. However I feel sorry for lorry drivers as The toll from April for drivers of those vehicles will leap from £1.30 to £2.80 per journey. A disgrace!

You ungrateful b*****ds. £2+ to get across nearly a mile wide of very deep, unpredictable water? You people don't know your born! "But,but, they promised" NO! They didn't promise anything. "But,but, they said..." So what? If they told you Santa goes down chimneys would you believe THEM? GROW UP! Try and get across the mersey without using the tunnel(which DOES NOT BELONG TO ANY OF YOU) see how far you get. £2+. It's a b****y bargain.

Dirty smelly unreliable bus from Wallasey to Liverpool one way £2.60. Nice car door to door £1.30 each way. No contest really is it?

Hope Teki is just doing his/her usual wind up because they do belong to us. (Same as the post office but I digress).

Spiffy, Wallasey says...

I deduced Teki was male after the comment in the Bond thread that it was "like looking in a mirror."

Or possibly what used to be referred to as a 'handsome' woman.

Oh what a way to encorage even lesser trade to use liverpool capital of culture. Fine I and many others will go to the outlet village in ellesmere port free parking, and the freedom to use my car.
Oh such a crime, still I could get the tram we the council tax payers paid for and never got.

TO JUSTIN DUNN
Justin, I believe that the toll for buses at the moment is £1.30
Your article states that bus tolls are going from £3.90 to £4.20. Any chance of clarification on the propose toll for buses. If they are planning to raise bus tolls from £1.30 to £4.20 their statement that "the increase will discourage people from using the tunnels as a cheap alternative to public transport" is nothing but a smokescreen. What will happen, the operators will just add the extra costs on to fare levels and make public transport even more expensive than it already is.

Jack Frost, cloud cuckoo land says...

Am I imagining the past or did I read something from Merseytavel stating the tunnels would be free during 2008...

teki, Birkenhead says...

How much?

Paul Mc, Birkenhead says...
11:34am Mon 4 Feb 08

I live in Birkenhead, and would use Public transport,if it could guarentee, I got to work on Edge Lane by 5.30am.
Train and Bus times before 5.30am dont exist .
If a 10p rise for tunnel users is going to raise a further 3.6 million per year,How much do they make at the moment?
A copy of the original mandate, where the King pleged the tunnel would be free once its paid for itself, needs to be sourced.

Nicola, Hoylake says...
1:50pm Mon 4 Feb 08

I am disgusted with the news that the tunnel free may be put up by a further 10p. How have they got the nerve to suggest that the commuters who use the tunnels should have to pay for shortfalls in other areas. Mr Gordon Brown managed to sort things out for his kin, Why not us???

Toll Payer, Wallasey says...
9:40pm Mon 4 Feb 08

It is a disgrace that this increase was 'passed' by 6 votes for, 4 against and 8 abstentions!!
8 abstentions, I ask you!
In the words of Victor, 'I don't believe it!'

Dave Rimmer, Wallasey says...
11:36pm Mon 4 Feb 08

If Toll Payers facts are correct its a bl**dy disgrace. Why are these people who abstained on the committee....they should be removed for not voting on such an important decision

teki, Birkenhead says...

I voted for it.

pierre durand, wirral says...

Phil Fleming, a Wirral businessman who is actually a member of Merseytravel’s advisory tunnels board, said: “The last thing that I would have expected was them to try to put the toll up without any consultation. I would have thought this was the worst year to have done this (Capital of Culture).

“From a PR point of view, they seem to shoot themselves in the foot.”

Will we get a breakdown of how councillors voted. i can`t believe 8 of them abstained, didn`t they understand the question? They are elected to make decisions on our behalf not sit on the fence, those that took the "don`t know" decision are as bad as those that voted for the rise.

Wally Powell, Wallasey says...
1:21pm Tue 5 Feb 08

The usual cranks with 'tunnel vision'. Inflation is a fact of life and there no such thing as a free lunch: as long as that bl***y tram fiasco does not come back!!!!!

Hippocrates, Wirral says...
1:21pm Tue 5 Feb 08

I read in the Daily Post that it was the lib dem members who abstained! - might have guessed that. I agree with matty - we vote for these people and they are supposed to be there to make decisions on our behalf - by not voting they are failling us - do they have a backbone? Reminds me of a local MP who abstained on the Iraq war decision. If they are not prepared to do the job they were elected to do, then they should let someone else do it!

Rockerfeller, Wirral says...
5:14pm Thu 7 Feb 08

The price rises for the tunnels and everything else will just keep on rising until the British people rebel against them just like the French, if they are not happy with something they will fight it tooth and nail, they dont always win but at least they have had a go not like us here in Britain we just sit back and take it and while we do, these prices will just keep on going up, and as for the Lib Dem councillors who abstained they should resign immediately,

Marchen, Wirral says...
1:10pm Fri 8 Feb 08

May I suggest, if you must use the tunnel only use the manned booths in both directions, then lets se how long these exobitant charges last

Tim Joyce, Upton says...
6:09pm Fri 8 Feb 08

I am disgusted to see that the same week that this rise goes through Merseytravel are wasting hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds on wooden troughs & plants along the edge of the Toll zone. So much for needing the money!
