LOCAL Lib Dems are calling on Wirral Council to oppose the Government's plan for ID Cards.

In the wake of the Government's record of losing the records of 25 million people and rejecting proposals to improve the security of personal data, they are calling for a vote of "no confidence" in the plan.

Instead they say that the costs, which are estimated at between £5.5 billion and £18 billion, would be better spent on more police.

Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Wirral West Councillor Peter Reisdorf is seconding the Lib Dems Notice of Motion at the full council meeting on Monday December 17.

Councillor Reisdorf, who has recently been out on a Friday night patrol with Police Community Support Officers, said: "Having seen their work at first hand, I have no doubt that our local Police do an excellent job, but more resources would help.

"Labour's ID card scheme will cost billions of pounds. Law abiding citizens could have to pay over £100 each to carry an ID card. Liberal Democrats would cancel the scheme and divert the money to pay for more police.

"The Government's record on IT projects is woeful and industry insiders are already warning that it will not be possible to guarantee the security of personal information.

"Under the ID Card plans everyone will have to inform the Government of any change to their personal details.

"Failure to do this could mean a fine of £1000."

But you admit yourself, you have not seen POLICE at work, you say;

THEY are NOT "police", Reisdorf. If THAT is what you want to spend the money on, then me, who thinks I.D cards are the final act in Browns version of "Britain, 1984", sais the I.D cards would be a better optiion. The actual WASTE would be less.

Here we go again...the infamous ID cards...as far as I am concerned they can shove the bl**dy things where the sun dont shine. Just another useless money making scam by HMG.

The government's insistence on the introduction of ID cards continues because Nulabour relish the thought of having yet more control over our lives and because it is required by EU directive.
ID cards will do nothing to curb crime or illegal immigration as they will be handed out to all and sundry in the same way that national insurance numbers and security jobs at the home office have. They are about keeping tabs on people for political purposes, nothing else.
With the recent signing of the EU reform treaty (constitution) and its near assured ratification next year, it will not be long before our votes really do count for nothing and the politburo will be able to drop the pretence of giving a **** about the wishes of the British people.

Oh dear, Keith...off again on another one of your anti-europe, anti-labour rants I see.

The government don't need id cards to keep tabs on you - they already have more than enough information to do that.

Still, I'd probably be as bitter as you if I lived so close to a motorway ;-)

Remember, they're coming to get you...

Anti NuLabour? I am.
Anti EU? I am.
I spent 18 years in government service and have followed their antics closely for a considerable time. My distrust of socialist politicians and their favoured institutions is born of intimate knowledge and experience.
Anti Europe? I am not, having worked in several European countries I would have been at a considerable disadvantage if I were. There are many millions of people across Europe that share this distrust. The fact that neither the BBC nor The Guardian report these facts does not detract from them, if anything if gives them more credence.
Anyone that cannot make the distinction between the EU and Europe does so out of deliberate mischief or uneducated ignorance.
