Over 25,000 people living in Wirral have diabetes or are at risk of developing the condition without knowing it. Finding out that you have diabetes can be extremely worrying and the impact it might have on your life. Understanding and knowing more about it is a vital part of being able to manage and live well with diabetes at home.
The Nutrition and Dietetics service at Wirral Community NHS Trust offer two education courses for people who have been diagnosed with either type 2 diabetes or Impaired Glucose Regulation (IGR/pre diabetes).
The pre diabetes course is currently a one off half day session and the type 2 diabetes course is a six week course for 2.5 hours per week. Both courses cover:

• introduction to IGR / diabetes
• how to improve blood glucose control
• weight management
• healthy eating
• food labelling and carbohydrate awareness
• physical activity
• preventing health problems

Nationally, type 2 diabetes is on the increase, but there are steps people can take such as having a healthy diet and doing more physical activity which can help prevent or delay the chances of developing the condition.

You can either book onto the courses directly at www.wirralct.nhs.uk/diabetes or ask to be referred by your GP or healthcare professional.
