A DEVOTED daughter will take part in Wirral's Race for Life in tribute to her mum who survived skin cancer.

Sammie Clynch and four-year-old daughter Bethany, from Rock Ferry, aim to raise as much money as possible during the event in Birkenhead Park on Sunday July 15.

Sammie, 23, was just 15 when her mum Alice Clynch was diagnosed with skin cancer.

In 2004, Alice, now aged 63, visited the GP after a mole on her leg became sore and had grown in size.

Alice was immediately referred to Clatterbridge Hospital where the mole was removed and analysed.

The mole proved to be cancerous, but Alice didn’t need further treatment.

Sammie, who is a stay-at-home mum to her two children aged two and four, said: "I will never forget the day my mum told me she had cancer, I was so upset.

"Even though it was skin cancer and it was very treatable, it was still cancer and it really hit me.

"Since then I have always done what I can to support Cancer Research UK because I think it's such an important cause."

Last year Sammie and Bethany took part in the Wirral Race for Life for the first time and they will be participating again this June.

Sammie added: "Cancer Research UK's Race for Life is a fantastic event and I really enjoyed taking part last year with my little girl Bethany.

"When you're there and you see all the people taking part and read the signs on their backs you realise just how many people are affected by the disease.

"My mum will be there with my little boy Jenson cheering us on.

"I can't wait to do it and am hoping to raise as much money as possible."

This year, Sammie will also be completing the race in tribute to the mother of boyfriend, Ross Wilson.

Janet Wilson lost her fight against lung cancer in February 2012 - just six weeks after being diagnosed with the disease.

Last year, 4,366 women took part in Race for Life in the Wirral and raised £184,487.

This year, organisers want 5000 women and girls to register and so far, 1,220 have signed up.

Proceeds will help Cancer Research UK raise millions of pounds fund life-saving research into 200 types of cancer.
