A WIRRAL dad believes it will take a fatality for council officers to carry out work at an "accident blackspot" near his home.

Steve Moss, from Wallasey, has had to replace his front garden wall three times after drivers have crashed into it when exiting a mini-roundabout.

The father-of-three said he has asked Wirral Council repeatedly to treat the road surface on Breck Road to stop drivers skidding into his wall but no action has yet been taken.

And now Steve fears that the problem will lead to a death if work is not done.

He said: "Ever since the roundabout was put in, there have been so many crashes here.

"It usually happens after we have had dry weather for some time and lorries or buses leak their diesel on the road.

"Cars will then come round from Liscard into Wallasey Village and skid into mine and my next door neighbour's walls.

"They are not going particularly fast at all, it is purely down to the road surface.

"It is not the fact that we have to keep replacing the brickwork but more that there are thousands of kids walking down here at the end of the school day – will it take a tragedy for something to be done?"

Steve, who has lived in Breck Road for more than 25 years, said he was promised by council officials that 'anti-slip' treatment would be put down in 2008.

But after a series of letters to the local authority, he is still dealing with regular incidents – the most recent involving a young woman less than two weeks ago.

He added: "It is not worth thinking about if someone happened to be walking past at the exact time of an accident but I think that is what it might take someone to take action."

However a council spokesman said plans are underway to solve the problem and work is expected to begin soon.

The spokesman said: "Plans are already in place to lay a new high-grip road surface to address this issue.

"The work is expected to take place within the next two months and will be followed by new carriageway markings to slow traffic down on the approach to the roundabout."
