RIOTERS caused the evacuation of Birkenhead ambulance station, it has emerged today.

The decision to relocate was taken late last night as the mob neared the service's Bentinck Street centre, close to Exmouth Street.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "The service was closely monitoring events yesterday in conjunction with the wider NHS community and regional police forces.

"Two ambulance stations in Merseyside - Toxteth and Birkenhead - were evacuated and staff positioned elsewhere due to tensions in the area.

"These [stations] are now operating normally."

Ambulances attended only one riot-related incident in Merseyside - a double stabbing on Smithdown Road, and the patient was transported to the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

The spokesman continued: "Despite one ambulance coming under attack in Manchester, the Trust is pleased to report no ambulance staff were injured.

"As yesterday, the Trust will liaise closely with police and NHS colleagues throughout today have full operational plans in place should repeat events occur.

"The service is operating normally throughout the region and would like to thank the public for their patience and support."
