A man has climbed to the top of a tower crane at a building site in New Brighton and is threatening to throw himself off.
Police negotiaters are at the scene and are trying to communicate with the man, whose identity is not known.
Roads around Portland Road at the site of the former Hotel Victoria are closed to traffic.
Police say they were alerted by the public just after 7pm this evening.
A spokesman described the situation as "delicate" and advised that roads will have to remain closed for "as long as it takes."
