A MILK-crawl, the ‘Big Feed’ and a flashmob are just some of the events lined up in Wirral to celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.

New initiatives to increase breastfeeding in Wirral are proving a great success - in the last year alone the number of breastfeeding mums has risen by more than 11%.

It is hoped National Breastfeeding Awareness Week, which takes place from June 19 to June 25, will encourage even more mums to give their child the best start in life.

Events include support and advice stalls at several venues throughout the week there will be a ‘milk-crawl’ in which mums can rate venues for being breastfeeding friendly.

And on Saturday, June 25, at 11am, there will be a flash mob dance at St Werburgh’s Square in Birkenhead.

Hundreds of people have already watched the dance on Youtube.

The World Health Organisation and the Department of Health recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, because of its extensive benefits.

Breastfeeding mums give their babies the perfect nutrition in every feed.

They also offer protection against ear infections, eczema and asthma, that formula milk doesn’t provide.

Breast milk also helps protect against obesity, and there is now evidence to prove that it helps make babies smarter.

The local events have been organised in a joint partnership between Wirral Community NHS Trust, Sure Start, Home Start and Wirral University Teaching Hospital.
