Council tax burdens for many Wirral pensioners will be a little lighter this year.

Over 75s across the borough will be entitled to receive a council tax reduction equating to £101 for band C properties.

So far 8757 have benefitted from the reduction.

Council leader Cllr Jeff Green said: "Many pensioners in Wirral have contributed throughout their lives to this Borough and many have been feeling the pinch.

"By cutting the running costs of the Council, we have been able to protect the support we give to our older Council Taxpayers.

"Although some pensioners have already applied, I know there will be others who could be helped by the Council Tax discount but have not applied before. It's really important that friends and family of anyone who could apply, encourages them to do so.

"This is a great way to help pensioners with the cost of living."

"If people have applied for the over 75s council tax discount before, it will be shown on their new bill.

To find out if more about the discount available to the over 75s call 0151 606 2002 or log on to the council website www.wirral.gov.uk

As part of the drive to cut costs, this year's Council Tax mailing no longer includes a 28-page full colour booklet and, in a first for Wirral, Cllr Green is asking residents to identify issues that need action in their road and neighbourhood in a survey to all Council Taxpayers.

He said: "When the bills arrive, people will also now have the opportunity to tell us how they want some of that money spent – tackling pot holes in their road, cleaning up their park or even getting more involved in their local community."
