COMMUTERS faced traffic chaos this morning as fire-fighters deal with a blazing tanker on the M53.

Twelve fire crews from across Merseyside were called to the scene near Woodchurch. The incident began at around 8.40am today.

Both sides of the motorway had been closed to traffic causing huge tailbacks.

The blaze was extinguished by around 10.30am, although fire and rescue crews are still at the scene damping down.

The tanker driver managed to escape unharmed.

A spokesman for Suttons, the company responsible for the solvent-carrying vehicle, said there was minor damage to the trailer.

He said: "The driver was uninjured and there was little damage to the main trailer.”

A Highways Agency spokesman said both carriageways of the M53 have now fully reopened.
