A team of officers from Merseyside Police, including Wirral Area Commander, John Martin, have been raising money by taking part in the 14 mile Tough Guy Challenge in farmland near Wolverhampton.

The team braved frozen water, crawled through pitch black tunnels and, narrowly avoiding being electrocuted along with about six thousand other applicants.

The team have been in training for months, many with the memories of sub-zero temperatures of last year's event and took part in the challenge to raise money for Alder Hey Children's Hospital's Imagine Appeal.

They hope to raise money to help research into childhood cancer.

They completed the course in about two-and-a-half hours and crossing the finishing lines was obviously quite a relief: "It's not about the winning, its about the taking part, the finishing and raising some serious money for charity along the way." said Supt Peter Edge.

When asked about a repeat performance, he said: "Well this particular Tough Guy has done it three times and definitely won't be doing it again. I suspect some of my colleague will give it another go though."

The police team included Chief Superintendents John Martin, Rob Carden and Alan Barr, along with Superintendents Peter Edge and Paul White, Inspector Stephen Kavanagh and Constable Alexander Baird.
