THE outgoing Bishop of Birkenhead, the Rt Rev David Urquhart, opened Birkenhead School's new Early Years facilities last week.

The facilities comprise a nursery that takes babies and toddlers from three months to three years of age, and a new pre-prep building housing boys and girls from three to five years.

The facilities include provision for before and after-school care for children up to age 11.

Bishop David, whose appointment as the new Bishop of Birmingham was announced last week, toured both facilities and met staff and children. He unveiled a commemorative plaque in each building.

The nursery is housed in one of the school's original, elegant Victorian buildings which has been imaginatively restored and adapted, while the pre-prep occupies a new architect-designed building of stunning modern appearance.

Headmaster John Clark said: "Putting this final piece in the jigsaw means that we are now able to offer continuity of education and excellence for children from 3 months to 18 years.

"It makes for a very exciting school with a great family focus."
