AS part of a crackdown on burglaries, police are reminding readers this week about the importance of keeping their homes secure.

An advertising van will be out and about reinforcing the home security message as part of a week-long police and Wirral Council campaign.

Chief Inspector Simon Irving said that, despite repeated warnings, residents were still not locking their doors properly and falling victim to burglars.

He said the majority of incidents were happening at homes with UPVC doors when homeowners were not locking them from the inside when they went to bed or left the house.

He said: "It only takes a few minutes for burglars to enter and steal from a home and they will look to identify an easy target, Half of all domestic burglaries have no forced entry, and the burglar simply enters through an open door or window.

He added: "Thieves will take advantage and some residents, who haven't locked up properly, have returned to find handbags, mobile phones and credit cards missing. I would urge neighbours to keep an eye on their neighbours' property and if you see a window or door left open, tell them."

Several home insurance companies now insist that all external doors, including inter-connecting internal garage doors, are fitted with a five-lever British Standard mortice lock (BS 3621) or a multi-point locking system, similar to that found on newer style UPVC patio doors. All ground floor windows must be fitted with key operated window locks.
