WIRRAL Council has begun consultation over its plans to scrap free disc zone parking spaces in Birkenhead.

In what it describes as "a major exercise" the authority has written to 900 residents and 600 businesses over its plans to change parking regulations.

It said increased traffic, evolving Government policies and changes to the commerce, retail and residential elements within Birkenhead had prompted the review.

Director of technical services David Green said: "The present scheme confuses motorists from outside the area who are unfamiliar with the regulations and it is extremely difficult to enforce.

"We want to encourage motorists to make more use of alternative modes of transport and think twice before taking a journey by car.

"This review is aimed at freeing up parking spaces for those who have no option but to travel by car.

"It should also help local businesses by encouraging a faster turnover of parking spaces which makes it easier for customers and visitors to find a space."

He said traffic management officers have carried out a series of parking surveys in Birkenhead and attention is now being turned to gauging the views of the community.

In its letter it appeals for as many people as possible to respond to a survey, to enable officers to gain a full understanding of parking requirements.

Options being considered as part of this review are increased on-street parking provision, introducing resident parking schemes, charging for on street parking within the current disc zone, reviewing the current controlled parking boundaries, and reviewing days and times of operation of the controlled zone.

The results from the questionnaire will help prepare a report outlining proposals for the environment and transport select committee. The plan will then be advertised.
