IF you take little notice of road signs, traffic lights or other drivers when you are out and about in your car, watch out!

That's the message from Merseyside Police who began a month-long crackdown on drivers disregarding the rules of the road.

The month-long campaign was launched on Saturday and motorists failing to conform to road traffic signs, signals and markings will be stopped. The aim is to reduce the number of road traffic accidents resulting in death or serious injury.

Since January, 2000, 265 people have been killed or seriously injured on the roads of Merseyside as a direct result of a driver failing to conform to a traffic sign.

Traffic Inspector Dave Bell said: "As part of our strategy to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads of Merseyside, we want to make motorists aware of the potentially fatal consequences of failing to conform to traffic signs and signals.

"All drivers, whether they rush through traffic lights just as they change to amber, to those who deliberately flout red traffic signals and road signs are putting, not only their own lives at risk, but also the lives of others.

"We urge all motorists to maintain their concentration whilst driving to ensure they are aware of their surroundings and that they safely and correctly observe all traffic signs.

"We are now six months into our initiative to 'drive down road death' on the roads of Merseyside and our commitment remains unwavering. If you flout the road traffic law, you put yourselves and others in danger, and you will be caught."
