THOUSANDS of bras fluttered in the breeze at West Kirby marine lake on Sunday as Wirral's Breakthrough Breast Cancer group drew attention to the disease.
The bra chain challenge, which highlights the start of breast cancer awareness month saw 45 volunteers take two hours to display 5,500 bras, donated by Wirral women.
And although the day's aim was to raise awareness, the group still received more than £600 in donations from passers-by.
Group chairman, Jane Boulton, said: "We had a really fantastic day. Everybody was very positive. People were winding down the windows of their cars and giving money which was really heartening.
"And we were given more bras as we went along with people realising what we were doing and nipping home to find more bras to add to our chain.
"Everyone was laughing and they knew what it was about. Breast cancer touches so many people and the bra chain has got everyone talking about it."
The bras will now be sent to Cyprus where British ladies living on the island will attempt to break the world record held by a team from Singapore which stands at 79,000 bras.
The 90,000 bras they hope to collect will be sent to Africa after the world record attempt in April.
