WORK begins next week to remove Arrowe Park round-about and replace it with traffic lights.

Wirral Council says the £1m scheme will improve traffic flow.

Work is due to start on Monday, and the project should be completed by April, 2006, in time for the Open Golf championship at Hoylake.

The council's director of technical services, David Green, said: "Currently there is severe congestion at this roundabout at peak times. This scheme is aimed at reducing the problem and the associated pollution."

Timings of the signals will be computer controlled. CCTV will also aid traffic flow.

The scheme includes improvements to all approach roads to the junction.

Some residents had campaigned to keep the floral roundabout.

But the council said the new design allowed for potential landscaping in a number of areas.
