Middlesbrough . . . 25pts Birkenhead Park . . . 21pts

A POOR first-half showing left Birkenhead Park struggling to play catch up rugby in Saturday's game at Acklam Park as Middlesbrough inflicted a first Powergen North League Division One defeat of the season on Birkenhead.

Park found themselves 25-0 down in the first half-hour. Park gave themselves a lifeline with a penalty try after Boro collapsed a driving maul short of the line. Davis converted and the home side were comfortably ahead 25-7 at the interval.

In the second-half, Birkenhead ran in two excellent long range scores through winger Greg Hughes. Davis converted twice and suddenly Park were in striking distance with 15 minutes still on the clock. The Boro defence was shaky, but they rode out the storm, adding a penalty.

This Saturday, Park welcome league newcomers Westoe, from South Shields, to the Upper Park (kick-off 3pm). Next Tuesday, Birkenhead take on Macclesfield in the Cheshire Cup Quarter Final in a floodlit match at Chester (8pm).
