Heswall sunk by late goal

THERE was a thrilling Cheshire Amateur Cup quarter-final tie at Cammell Laird, on Saturday, when the hosts emerged 4-3 winners against Heswall in a game in which the lead constantly changed hands.

Mark Brady, 2, and Graham Pringle scored for Heswall, but goals by Ken Berry, Jimmy Kelly, Mick Connors (penalty) and Paul Ford, whose winner came in the dying minutes, won the day for Cammell Laird.

Despite making a bright start, Bromborough Pool found themselves 3-0 down after 20 minutes of their tie against visiting Barnton. The runaway Mid-Cheshire League leaders eventually completed a 5-2 success with Lee, Murphy, 2, John Lenard, Dave Days and an own goal registering. Bromborough Pool, who finished with nine men, replied through Mark Robinson and Ian Murphy.

A tremendous performance by Division Two club West Kirby took them into the last four with a 1-0 victory over Capenhurst, Matthew Park proving the match winner, while Poulton Vics (Simon Lewis, 2, Paul Connor and an own goal) brushed off the challenge of Vauxhall 4-0.

In Division One, a late Jamie Griffiths strike denied Moreton a point as they went down 1-0 in an absorbing contest at Newton, while Stork (Paul Huggins, 2, Alan Kline) lost by the odd goal in seven at Mond Rangers, who had Andy Gott registering a hat-trick. Striker Lee Eason struck the game's only goal as Mersey Royal completed a league double over Merseyside Police.

Draw for the Cheshire Amateur Cup semi-finals, to be played week commencing March 3, features Cammell Laird v West Kirby and Poulton Vics v Barnton.
