LOCAL MP Andrew Miller visited Inner Marsh Farm, Burton, with Dr Andre Farrar, of the RSPB.

Inner Marsh Farm is part of a large area of land which was historically claimed from the Dee estuary. The farm was agricultural land before it was purchased by the RSPB.

Since then, it has been managed as a wetland and is now internationally important for wildfowl in its own right.

Inner Marsh Farm RSPB Nature Reserve is an important wintering/passage area for many bird species. Of particular note are the internationally important numbers of pintail and the nationally important numbers of teal and black tailed godwit.

Among other bird species which are found in large numbers on the reserve are lapwing, shoveler and wigeon. It is also a breeding area.

The Dee estuary is under threat from a variety of development, but careful management of Inner Marsh Farm by the RSPB has helped to redress the balance, Mr Miller was told.
