SOME 600 more young people are now out of work in Wallasey than at the last General Election, says local Labour MP Angela Eagle.

She described the increase as "an appalling result of the Tories failed policies on the family and on jobs."

She added: "This increase of 600 children locally comes almost entirely in jobless households with lone parents. More and more lone parents are finding themselves trapped with their children in homes without work.

"They are often excluded from the official unemployment statistics, as they can't find jobs which can be combined with their childcare responsibilities."

Ms Eagle called for a national child-care strategy for both pre-school and school-age children, so that parents would be able to match the hours they work with childcare responsibilities.
