Heswall forced the door open on the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division One title race following a dramatic finale to their 4-2 victory over leaders Poulton Victoria. With 10 minutes remaining, Heswall held a 2-0 lead with strikes by Chris Durkin and Chris Li, only for Vics to level through Robbie Glanvill and Dave Galloway.

Undaunted, Heswall responded in grand manner with Mark Brady coolly netting twice to deservedly earn his side the points.

Bromborough Pool kept their hopes alive as they had Paul Murphy and Colin Littlejohn on target in a 2-1 success at Newton. Mike Harris replied.

Mersey Royal suffered a 1-0 defeat at Capenhurst, Alan Brown netting the all-important goal, but the usually reliable John Thompson saw his penalty saved.

Visitors Christleton (Peter Houghton, Adrian Tydd) twice held the lead at Cammell Laird, but despite missing from the spot Lairds snatched a point through Peter Robinson and Wayne Foden.

Leaders Heswall Reserves had a double marksman in Jamie Kelly and Paul Munnerley completed a 3-0 success at Upton AA. New Brighton had debut boy Peter Bowden, as well as Colin Hawitt and Jon Williams, on the mark when coming from behind to win 3-1 at Bromborough Pool Reserves (Chris Thomas). Cammell Laird Reserves followed up a 2-1 West Cheshire Bowl semi-final win over Castrol Social in mid-week (John Edwards, 2), to beat Poulton Vics Res 2-0 (Paul Murray, Dave Robinson).

A resurgent Mersey Royal Reserves climbed out of the relegation zone as doubles from player/manager Iggy McGwa and Martin Ross registered in a 4-1 home victory over Capenhurst Reserves, while Danny Mulla and Andy Robinson scored in Ashville Reserves' 2-0 win at Christleton Reserves.

Manor Athletic are still in trouble after suffering a 4-0 home reversal at the hands of promotion seeking Blacon YC, with Ray Prior, 2, Dale Edwards and John Hayden on target.

Wooden spoonists Stork Reserves were on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline at the hands of Vauxhall Reserves, with Nick Pantazides, Chris Roscoe and Mike Collins.
